Here’s something I’ve been thinking about lately. What do you think about this?
Let me know.

Back in the Groove

I blinked, and here it was. September.

I know I say it every year, but every year it's true: Summer goes by like a fast freight train on greased rails.

Still, I have to admit, I love this time of year. You see, September to June is when I get to visit kids in their schools and talk about writing, and that's one of my favorite things to do. I really miss it over the summer.

This year, I'm getting more and more requests to come to the classroom to talk about poetry. I don't know if that's because there's an increased interest in poetry or because my new book THE NIGHT IS SINGING is a rhyming picture book. Whatever the reason, I'm all for it. I love talking about poetry with kids.

Here's a metaphor that a fifth-grade boy came up with during one of my poetry-writing workshops. He said, "The woman's hair was cotton candy." Isn't that great? Close your eyes and imagine what that woman's hair looks like. What do you see? Is the hair puffy? Piled high? Blue or pink? Is it sticky? Does it taste sweet? What else do you imagine?

Can you think of an out-of-the-ordinary metaphor? If so, send it to me. I'll start a list and post it here.

What do you think? Let me know.
